Hi Everyone!
It’s August and that means many of us are in recharge our batteries mode. If you’re getting a bit of downtime, we’re sure it’s well deserved. As you’ll see, the Media Lab has been engaged and productive with lots to share. We’re excited to welcome Abran Maldonado as Associate Director of the Verizon 5G EdTech Program. He’s smart and super-cool, and you’ll meet him soon. Our ASCAP and Havas projects both wrapped with amazing teams. And our Machines + Media 5-episode series with Bloomberg was a smash hit. You can screen episodes here if you didn’t catch them all. We’ve got a BIG announcement coming up… next week… so watch your email. Till then, stay cool — busy fall season just around the corner.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY
Time Out & Untapped NY Feature Metro ARchive App from NYTimes Spatial Computing Challenge

Recent articles in Time Out New York and Untapped NY feature Metro ARchive — the augmented reality app that brings the streets and buildings of old New York to life before your eyes. Created by NYU Tandon Integrated Digital Media (IDM) students Samuel Avery Levin and McCoy Zhu, the app was conceptualized and built for the NYCML x NYTimes Spatial Computing for News Challenge.
The app’s 3 modes unlock history through various mediums: “Immersive” mode uses augmented reality to show how a building or site looked in the past. Switching to “historic” or “contemporary” mode gives the user voiceovers, blurbs, and articles to provide some context about the building’s architecture, history, and current status. The hope is that the Metro ARchive can integrate itself with print journalism experiences in addition to being something to use on-site in the streets.
The app is still in development and Levin and Zhu say they still have a ways to go until it’s ready for a major rollout. But in the meantime, we highly recommend signing up to test the Metro ARchive app here. NYCML & Verizon Explore the Future of Education With 5G

Our first annual Verizon Innovation Learning (VIL) Labs 5G Summit is officially on the books! From August 13–14, winners of NYCML x Verizon’s 5G EdTech Challenge demoed their innovative ed tech applications to an expansive virtual audience of educators, technologists, and executives.
Chosen from over 150 nonprofits and universities, these 8 teams piloted their products in Cleveland and now look forward to heading out into schools across the country to connect with teachers and collaborate on innovative ways we can use 5G to increase engagement, increase achievement, and prepare students for the workforce of the future. Whether teachers are using augmented reality to write Black and Brown history into American curriculum, or student teams work in virtual reality to build planets and put them into orbit, the learning possibilities with 5G are endless!
