This week we’ll be exploring the future of learning. As parents, teachers, and students around the world adjust to remote learning, we’re considering how new tools and emerging tech can help. Most of the featured pieces cover the edtech startups, the new technologies, and corporate initiatives in the space, and our first piece from WIRED poses an intriguing question:

The immense desire of my students to get back to normal is understandable. What if we could get back to better than normal?

None of us can predict the short or medium-term future, but it’s important to recognize that from our emergency stopgap distance and remote learning measures, there are a lot of amazing innovations being accelerated. This week, we’re shifting our perspective to consider how this global pandemic could actually increase educational access and efficacy in the longer run.

Also, we’ve incorporated feedback from a number of readers and shifted our format to one more focused on link curation! Next week, we’ll be covering Telehealth. If there are any specific startups or initiatives you’d like us to highlight, just hit reply or email me at erica@nycmedialab.org.

We wish you and your community safety, calm, and solidarity as we support each other through this unprecedented time. Thank you again for reading.

All best,
Erica Matsumoto

An intriguing media history moment from 79 years ago. After a 5–2 vote by the FCC, NBC was ordered to sell one of its two radio networks, which were called Red and Blue.

At the time there was only one other viable competitor, CBS, and the FCC felt the industry had become overly concentrated. NBC chose to sell off the “Blue Network” which went on to become ABC.
