New startups emerge at the intersection of augmented reality and digital health
Startups formed this summer during the Publicis Health Digital Health AR Startup Bootcamp in partnership with NYC Media Lab
The Publicis Health Digital Health AR Startup Bootcamp, a 6-week accelerator program in partnership with NYC Media Lab, recently concluded in July with a rapid pitch session at the Publicis offices. The participating startup teams, each selected from a university in NYC Media Lab’s consortium, presented to a panel of judges and mentors from across the advertising and media industry.
The goal for the accelerator program was to support emerging startups working to build augmented reality solutions to impact the healthcare industry. The teams completed a rigorous, Lean Launchpad curriculum, consisting of over 50 interviews for market validation and customer discovery. Mentors from NYC Media Lab, Publicis Health, and Digitas Health attended weekly check-in meetings and provided guidance as the startups worked through their concepts.

MealPic
NYU Tandon
MealPic is an app that brings the power of online product insights to real world food shopping for new and expecting moms. Our computer vision enables users to quickly identify unfamiliar foods. Through augmented reality and machine learning, moms can easily explore product information, peer feedback, and related suggestions specific to their unique needs. Amidst a rapid growth of food products and trends, MealPic provides convenience tools for busy moms to sort through chaos and eat smarter.

Ovee is an application that is designed for young women to take control of their sexual and reproductive health. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Ovee creates a safe space to ask questions and alleviates anxiety. The augmented reality system eliminates the need for outdated pamphlets and overly clinical information. Personalized visual markers allow women to learn about their bodies in a private setting, receive easily updated content, and engage with their health.

WonderLandAR

WonderLandAR is an augmented reality (AR) application that aids children in dealing with hospital phobia. It aims to transform the hospital into an interactive and playful environment for children with projection- based AR. Hospital environment generally causes children and parents to feel anxious. Thus WonderLandAR provides an affordable service for hospitals and clinics to change the meaning of experiencing a hospital favorably in a short amount of time.

SmartMatter
Borough of Manhattan Community College
SmartMatter is an augmented reality software dedicated to simplify doctor-patient treatment and communication in orthopedics. SmartMatter employs visualization, simulations and AR technology to create a virtual model of a patient, leveraging fit data and health sensors, in order to create a full patient profile for an orthopedic specialist. SmartMatter’s virtual patient model can be used to communicate with and instruct patients in aftercare and pain management and can serve as a comprehensive means of tracking patient progress in recovery.
