NYCML partnered with ASCAP to sponsor an 11-week open university challenge for grad students and faculty in creative tech, music, and design. Five selected teams, all from NYU, engaged in early-stage R&D to explore new ways to create and experience music using emerging technologies such as spatial audio, computer vision, and machine learning tools for object detection.
The two finalists, CHILLER and MADD by Team MiDi, joined Grammy-winning guitarist and ASCAP Lab Artist in Residence Vernon Reid to present their music tech prototypes at the NYC Media Lab Summit on October 9.
“Collaborating with these five incredible university teams and seeing them apply their imagination and ingenuity to the ASCAP Lab Seed Project has been inspiring,” said Nick Lehman, ASCAP Chief Strategy and Digital Officer. Read the full story in Variety.

ENDING ON A HOPEFUL NOTE… Citizen Browser Project Audits the Algorithms of Disinformation
The Markup, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates how the world’s most powerful institutions use technology to reshape society, announced the development of The Citizen Browser Project — an initiative designed to measure how disinformation travels across social media platforms over time.
At the center of The Citizen Browser Project is a custom web browser designed by The Markup to audit the algorithms that social media platforms use to determine what information they serve their users, what news and narratives are amplified or suppressed, and which online communities those users are encouraged to join. Initially, the browser will be implemented to glean data from Facebook and YouTube. Read more about the project and sign up for updates on what they uncover.
