Spectrum Partners with NYC Media Lab to Explore Augmented Reality Applications for Customer Service
Spectrum will award $25,000 to NYC-based student teams, recruited by NYC Media Lab, to participate in a challenge program

Spectrum, New York’s leading Internet, TV and telephone provider, is set to produce the “Spectrum: Exploring AR Applications for Customer Service” challenge program in collaboration with NYC Media Lab. The challenge will recruit New York City-based university students to work with leadership at Spectrum and apply their skills in augmented reality (AR) to help imagine the future of customer experiences for enterprise services.
AR superimposes computer-generated images, sounds and text on a user’s view of the real world, typically though mobile devices and smartphones.
“Spectrum sees great potential in working with the city’s university community, which is designing and developing the cutting-edge technologies that can enhance customer experiences and create opportunities to engage customers in new and innovative ways across the communications industry,” said Andrew Ip, senior vice president of Emerging Technologies and Innovation at Charter Communications. “There is a fountain of creativity, innovation and tech knowhow in the city’s universities, and we’re pleased to work with the NYC Media Lab to connect with that community.”
This fall, NYC Media Lab will launch the challenge application and lead a citywide recruitment effort to its university consortium, which includes: New York University, Columbia University, CUNY, The New School, Pratt Institute, School of Visual Arts, and IESE Business School. In collaboration with Spectrum, NYC Media Lab will select five teams of current university students to participate in the program, with each team receiving a $5,000 award. The challenge program will run from January through April 2019.
Students will be asked to apply AR technologies to explore new ways for how Spectrum can interact with its customers, specifically for the self-install kit for wireless routers and modems. The students will leverage their backgrounds and experiences in AR to explore compelling use cases, develop a proof of concept, and advise and make recommendations on what may be achievable in the next two to three years. The program will include weekly meetings with leadership at Spectrum, with an emphasis on encouraging interdisciplinary learning, rapid prototyping, and an iterative approach to product and service design.
